Porcelain Veneers

Are you self-conscious of your discolored or misshapen teeth? Do you cover your mouth with your hand when you smile?

Dental veneers can conceal mild to moderate aesthetic imperfections that detract from your teeth, giving you a smile to be proud of.

Dr. Brett Helton offers traditional and same-day veneers at our Columbus, GA, office to help you enjoy a new and improved smile.

What Are Veneers? One of the Most Popular Treatment
Options In Cosmetic Dentistry

A dental veneer is a thin shell typically made of medical-grade porcelain that is bonded to the tooth enamel to alter the shape, size, color, or texture of your teeth. The porcelain is made to resemble the appearance of a tooth, giving the wearer a symmetrical, natural-looking smile.

What Can Porcelain Veneers Correct?

Veneers are an effective and quick solution to several cosmetic dental concerns.

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth can mar an otherwise perfect smile. Adding a veneer can conceal the chipped tooth, and restore the aesthetics of your smile.

Gapped Teeth

Veneers can help hide the gap between two teeth and avoid the need for braces or other orthodontic treatments.

Crooked Teeth

Veneers are a quick solution for minor misalignments. Unlike braces, which can take months to straighten your teeth, veneers can give you a straighter smile in just two visits.

Misshapen Teeth

Veneers can be used to alter the shape and size of a small or misshapen tooth, so it perfectly matches your surrounding teeth.

Discolored Teeth

Veneers offer a quick solution to getting a brilliantly white smile for teeth that are resistant to traditional whitening, such as those with intrinsic staining.

Am I a Good Candidate For Porcelain Veneers?

Many people suffering from an aesthetically flawed smile can benefit from dental veneers. However, certain factors can affect your candidacy. Speaking with your dentist is the best way to know if veneers are a good solution for you. Good candidates for porcelain veneers should:

Be In Good Oral Health

Having healthy teeth and gums is necessary before getting dental veneers. Tooth decay, gum disease, or any other oral health issue will need to be treated before veneers can be placed. Our dentist will do an oral exam to determine the health of your teeth, gums, and the integrity of your enamel before he recommends dental veneers.

Not Grind Their Teeth

While the porcelain used for dental veneers is strong, it is not indestructible. If you struggle with teeth grinding (bruxism), veneers may not be a good solution for you. Chewing on hard objects, clenching your jaw, and grinding your teeth can negatively affect the structural integrity of your veneers and can cause them to chip, break, or come off entirely.

Be Committed

Veneers are a permanent treatment: once your enamel has been prepared for a veneer, your tooth will always need some type of restoration.  People who want porcelain veneers also need to be committed to maintaining good oral health after the veneers have been placed. Maintaining good oral habits like brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and going to the dentist every six months for dental checkups is necessary to keep your veneers looking stunning for years to come.

Using state-of-the-art technology, we can often create your permanent veneers in-office in just one visit.

Preparing Your Teeth

The front surfaces of the treated teeth must be prepared before veneer placement. Dr. Helton will remove a very small amount of enamel from the front surface of each tooth receiving a veneer, which keeps the veneer from protruding or looking artificial.

Taking Impressions

Dr. Helton will take impressions of your teeth. These impressions are created using advanced digital dental equipment to ensure accuracy.

Creating Your Veneers

After the impressions are created, they are sent to a special laboratory where the porcelain veneers are custom-made to fit the patient. The laboratory also receives guidance on the correct shade of porcelain to use. While the lab is crafting your permanent veneers, temporary veneers can be placed.

In some cases, we can make them in our office using CEREC technology. We evaluate patients on a case-by-case basis.

Testing the Fit

After the porcelain veneers have been created, Dr. Helton will make sure they fit properly and match the surrounding teeth. He will then provide a general cleaning of your teeth and gums.

Placing the Veneers

Dr. Helton will place the veneers using a special type of adhesive that bonds the porcelain shell to the surface of the tooth. Each veneer is carefully applied to ensure a precise fit is achieved.

Final Results

Your new smile is ready to be shown off immediately after the veneers are placed. With proper care, your porcelain veneers can last over a decade.

A small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth. This allows your veneer to blend
seamlessly with your other teeth. The veneer is then bonded to the tooth to conceal
cosmetic imperfections.

Nervous About Treatment? We Offer Sedation

Placing veneers is a virtually painless procedure that doesn't require general anesthesia or even sedation. However, we offer nitrous oxide sedation for patients nervous about the veneer process. Nitrous oxide wears off about 15 minutes after your procedure, allowing you to drive yourself home.

Are There Alternative Cosmetic Options?

While many patients prefer the look of dental veneers over other options, some patients may want a temporary or reversible treatment instead.

Teeth Whitening

Before and after teeth whitening

Professional teeth whitening is an easy way to get rid of surface stains. It can be completed in one office visit and maintained through custom take-home trays. However, some stains are too deep in the tooth for teeth whitening treatments to have an effect.

Dental Bonding

Before and after dental bonding

Dental bonding is the process of applying a tooth-colored resin directly to your enamel. This technique is less invasive than veneers since it does not require any alteration to your natural teeth. However, some patients find the resin does not have as natural of a look as porcelain veneers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Porcelain Veneers

Q. How long do veneers last?

A. With proper care and maintenance, your veneers can last for up to 15 years. It is important to remember that once a tooth has been modified with a veneer, it will always require some sort of restoration.

Q. Does veneer placement hurt?

A. No. Veneers are virtually painless. If you have sensitive teeth, your dentist can numb the area before he treats the tooth to ensure you are completely comfortable. We also offer sedation options for patients who need an extra level of comfort.

Q. Is there a limit to how many teeth can have veneers?

A. Porcelain veneers are used on front teeth. If you have a back tooth that needs restoration, your dentist may suggest alternative treatments like a dental crown or dental bonding

Q. Can a porcelain veneer be used to hide a missing tooth?

A. No. A veneer is not an option to conceal a missing tooth. However, we offer other treatments like dental implants, dental crowns, and dental bridges to replace missing teeth and restore your smile.
