Dental Crowns

A damaged tooth not only spoils your smile's appearance but can also risk further harm to your oral health.

Columbus Aesthetic & Family Dentistry can restore damaged or missing teeth with a dental crown, often in just one appointment.

Learn how our Columbus, GA, practice can repair your smile with a dental crown.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns
If you have a chipped, broken, or decayed tooth, a dental crown may be able to repair your smile. A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged tooth to protect the remaining natural tooth structure. Our dental crown restorations are custom-crafted from quality materials to ensure a natural, lifelike appearance.

Restore Your Smile With Same-Day Crowns

While traditional dental crowns are a trusted solution, typically patients must wait weeks for their permanent crown to be crafted by an off-site lab. That's not the case at Columbus Aesthetic & Family Dentistry.

In addition to traditional restorations, Dr. Brett Helton offers convenient same-day crowns. Our Columbus, GA, office uses the advanced CEREC® system to create crowns on-site while you wait. In as little as an hour, your beautiful and durable crown will be ready for placement.

Is a Same-Day Crown Right for You?

Same-day crowns are a great option for many of our patients. Our same-day crowns are all-ceramic, providing a natural-looking, discreet restoration. While this material works well for many patients, it may not offer the durability and strength required in certain circumstances. For example, patients who suffer from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, which causes clenching and teeth grinding, may need the added strength of a metal crown crafted off-site.

We offer sedation dentistry to ensure treatment is comfortable for all our patients.
We offer sedation dentistry to ensure treatment is comfortable for all our patients.

A local anesthetic will first be administered to the area to ensure your comfort. For patients anxious about dental work or unable to sit still for longer periods, we offer sedation dentistry using nitrous oxide to ensure comfortable treatment.

After the treatment area is numbed, Dr. Helton will perform any treatment needed, such as root canal therapy to address an infection, before the crown can be placed

Dr. Helton will then reshape your tooth so that the porcelain crown will sit flush with your other teeth.

He will then take digital impressions using the CEREC machine. These highly accurate images will be used to design a precisely fitting crown.

Dr. Helton will color-match the ceramic to the surrounding teeth to ensure that your restoration blends in seamlessly with your smile. The CEREC milling system will then be used to manufacture your crown from a small block of dental porcelain.

Once complete, your doctor will check the fit of your restoration. After any necessary adjustments have been made, the porcelain crown will be bonded securely in place using a specialized dental cement.

Crowns vs. Other Restorative Treatments

There are many different ways to repair a compromised tooth. The right solution for you depends primarily upon the extent of the damage. In every case, you can depend on us to recommend the most conservative option.

Fillings are used to replace a relatively small amount of decayed dental tissue. Our Columbus, GA, practice offers tooth-colored fillings made of composite resin for a natural look and feel. However, if a significant amount of tooth structure needs to be restored, a dental crown may be a better option.

Inlays and Onlays

These porcelain restorations can replace more tissue than a filling but less tissue than a crown. Inlays are typically used to replace part of the chewing surface of a molar. An onlay is used to replace part of the chewing surface as well as some of the outer edge. As with fillings, an inlay or onlay is not able to address as much damage as a crown.
